Posted on:

FREDERICK, MD – In the next couple weeks, we expect that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and then Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) may give emergency use authorization and make recommendations for children 5-11 years old to receive the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine. Frederick County Health Department has been working with our partners on plans to make vaccine easily available to this newly eligible age group. When the FDA authorization is officially granted and CDC’s vaccination recommendations are available to us, the following options will be available for parents and guardians to get their children vaccinated: Clinics will…

Screen Time

Posted on:

I’m going to divulge all of my horrible habits publicly. Actually, I’m really not, but I am going to admit to my screen time report. Some of you may not realize, but your mobile device can report your actual screen time in minutes, or in my case, hours. I don’t really feel all that embarrassed because I know I’m not alone in this social dilemma that electronics have created. As I glance at my phone, the amount of things I use it for is pretty insane. Banking, grocery shopping, work emails, travel plans, communication, home security, calendar, news, games, photos,…

To Get the Vaccine, or Not.

Posted on:

Well folks, so much for thinking 2021 would be different than 2020! I’m pretty realistic about life, but I had a secret idea that we would reach midnight and magically, the world would turn into this blissful, healthy, peaceful and harmonious place. Oh, and let me add, my delusion included warmer weather. I’m not an ally to cold weather by any stretch. But, here we are in the midst of a continued public health crisis, our children’s education has been distorted from the norm, our work lives are chaotic (especially in healthcare) and our day-to-day activities continue to be altered…

10,000 Steps

My new Apple Watch purchase has been quite amusing after being a devoted FitBit follower for years. I decided to swap the technology for a device that would correspond more accurately with my cell phone. I accidentally set my ideal sleep schedule not realizing it would alarm my wrist at 5:30am on a Saturday morning, and then I “pinged” my phone with the touch of a button and frantically ran around my room wondering what in the world was making such a loud sound. I’ve sent comical responses to text messages, turned the watch’s flashlight on without knowing (in the…

Stability Ball

Posted on:

I’m a bit of a cynic when it comes to trying new things. Especially when it’s being introduced by some of my younger employees. Maybe it’s because they have a ton more energy than I do, or maybe it’s my fear of not being able to keep up. Perhaps, it could very well be because I merely like the balance and structures proven effective, and throwing something new on my processes during the workday makes me a bit apprehensive.  Up until about a decade ago when I began my career with FPCA, I always worked in positions that allowed me…

Quarantine 15

Posted on:

We’ve all heard of the Freshman 15, especially those of us who bounced off to college and threw all healthy home cooked meal plans out the window for ramen and instant mac-n-cheese. There were late-night study sessions where bags of chips littered the table and let’s not hide the fact that beverage choices drastically changed. Maybe you’re shaking your head in kindred spirit with me, or maybe you have no idea what I’m even talking about, but I’d be willing to bet you’ll understand this: Quarantine 15 and Covid Curves. I’ll admit, they are funny to say but in reality,…

Summer!

Posted on:

Guess what, my friends? It’s SUMMER! Okay, not officially until June 20th, but since it lasts until September 22nd, we are going to be living in a crazy summer world like no other in our recent history! Vacations have been cancelled, restrictions have wreaked havoc on our normal summer activities, but some things haven’t changed. Like the sun! And, the heat. We all know Maryland is a little crazy with drastic weather changes in a short amount of time so let’s get prepared!  Today, we are talking about skin safety. I won’t deny the fact that I am a true…

Is This Our New Normal?

Posted on:

I think everyone is wondering if this is our new “normal”. I don’t really think anyone has an answer to this question or even a close thought as to how we will proceed come September, let alone, next week. I’ve found myself creating new playlists on my Amazon Alexa for each day of the week: Monday, Tuesday, Threesday, Blursday and whatever comes next. Do we even have weekends to look forward to anymore? Daily activities have resulted in watching TikTok (okay, okay…I’m in my early 40s and my kids are a bit older and independent so there’s no tutoring or…

Daylight Savings Time

Posted on:

What is it about one hour? It’s not like an entire day of traveling and adjusting to another time zone, it’s just ONE hour! Why do we struggle so much with Daylight Savings Time? Unlike some of my “morning people” friends and family, I was still tripping over my own feet trying to get a second cup of coffee several hours into the modified day. I enjoyed scrolling through social media while I waited for the caffeine to produce some efficacy, reading the memes and funny reactions people have to losing one hour of sleep. From pictures of Cher turning…
