New Medicare Cards

Over the years, Medicare has always issued beneficiary identification cards using patient’s social security numbers. With the increasing number of identity theft cases, fraud and growing concerns, they have decided to issue a new, unique, randomly-assigned number called a Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI). If you are in the Maryland, DC, Pennsylvania and Virginia region, you are in the first phase of the mailings. Subscribers will receive new Medicare cards in the mail, between April 2018 and June 2018. According to CMS, you do not need to do anything to request a new card, they will be issued to all beneficiaries.

Be sure to verify your information, specifically mailing address, by visiting ssa.gov/myaccount or call 1-800-772-1213. Please keep in mind, Medicare will NEVER call and ask for personal information before sending new cards. You will never need to share your Medicare number or other personal information if someone claiming to be associated with Medicare calls. Keep an eye out for more information in your mailbox regarding your new identification number and cards or you can check Medicare.gov for the latest updates.
